When one of your employees first meets a potential customer, it takes just 7 seconds for that customer to form an opinion. He or she will make several snap judgments about your employee and, in turn, your business. Will I do business with this person? Do I trust this person? Do they have authority? Do they seem qualified to work on my home or car? This is the Power of Perception.
To better illustrate this point, we addressed two scenarios in our previous blog, “Uniforms Identify Employees as Capable and Professional.” In the first scenario, a well-qualified and capable employee shows up to a job wearing dirty jeans, a tattered white t-shirt and boots. In the second scenario, an equally qualified and capable employee shows up to a job wearing a clean, freshly laundered uniform. Who do you think the customer will trust more? This is the Power of Perception. While both employees are qualified, the customer makes a snap judgment about that employee and your business based solely on appearance.
You will never stop people from making snap decisions based on their first impressions of your employees. You can, however, make a better first impression.
The Power of Perception: Making a Great First Impression
- It is important to be on time for appointments. A potential customer is not interested in your “good excuse” for being late.
- Be yourself and be at ease. If you or your employees appear nervous, the customer will notice.
- A fresh, clean uniform gives potential customer and clients the impression that your employees are professionals and experts in their field.
