Gym attendance tends to increase by roughly 33-50% each January, according to the International Health, Racquet, & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA).
“January is the perfect storm,” said IHRSA Chairman Bill McBride. “You’ve got cold weather, a long month, psychological awareness about achieving goals, and everybody’s finally out of vacation mode.”
Just a few short months after the start of the new year, however, gyms can already see a marked decrease in daily attendance. According to IHRSA, 80% of the New Year’s Resolutions crowd will stop going to the gym by the second week of February. And that rate tends to taper off as the year goes on. 73% of people who make fitness their New Year’s resolution give up before meeting their goals, according to an online study conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of Bodybuilding.com.
- 42% say it’s too difficult to follow a diet or workout regimen.
- 38% say it’s too hard to stay on track.
- 36% say they can’t find the time.
When all is said and done, a mere 18% of people actually use their gym memberships, according to IHRSA.
