What Is a Parka?

Geodesist measure land speak transmitter

What exactly is a parka, and is it right for workwear?

When you think about it, you will discover that the world of outerwear is a lot more complex than you realize. There is the difference between coats and jackets, and there are so many variations within these two categories as well. You have surely heard the term “parka” thrown around, but what is a parka?

What Is a Parka?

When you search “parka” online, you might run into different kinds of waterproof winter jackets. Specifically, a parka is a heavy, weatherproof jacket that extends below the hip. It also may come with a fur-lined hood.

Parkas originate with the Inuit people near the Arctic Circle. Traditionally, they created water and windproof jackets made out of marine animal skins and other parts. These dense, weather-resistant garments have become commercialized for anyone to wear in weather that reaches below the freezing point. Of course, they are also usually made with durable materials that are not marine wildlife.

What Makes Parkas Different?

A jacket is usually a lighter, more utilitarian piece of outerwear, while a coat tends to be heavier and potentially more fashionable. A jacket usually only extends to the hip, while a coat can be hip length or longer.

You have your windbreakers, trench coats, raincoats, and puffer jackets, but where does the parka fit in? As mentioned above, it is unique in that it is heavy, longer, and comes with a hood. It is technically a type of jacket, but does not fit the general definition of a jacket. A parka is different from all other coats and jackets because of its weight, length, and protection against the cold, especially with the presence of a hood.

Who Benefits from Parkas?

Parkas are practical for everyday winter wear and for professional outdoor work alike. If you are engaging with biting outdoor weather that hovers or dips below the freezing point, then a parka is an excellent garment to have on hand. Professionally, parkas work well for people in industries like agriculture, transportation, utilities, construction, mining, hospitality, and more.
